The founding board members of Leadership LINKS partnered with SHABACHI! Ministries, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization of First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Prince George County, Maryland, as they hosted their first leadership summer program for 7th through 10th grade girls. The founding board members of Leadership LINKS had the opportunity to outline and execute the program, in addition to creating the program’s curriculum. This pilot program has become the foundation for Leadership LINKS, Inc. to build future programming and community offerings. With a unique curriculum surrounding the program’s theme, “Walk in Purpose, Unlock the Leader Within,” future leaders were able to learn about leadership through the organization’s core values of Love, Inspiration, Network, Knowledge, and Service. Participants also had the opportunity to practice leadership skills like casting a vision, organizing a business, team building, professional appearance, and public speaking. Additionally, participants learned about holistic self-care through eating well, proper hydration, skin care, purity, and physical exercise regarding First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. Finally, future leaders were exposed to career fields like business and entrepreneurship, military and government, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and global justice.
